The past weekend brought bad news for a former Detroit Tigers pitcher and a now-former Tigers manager. Justin Verlander requiring reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and Ron Gardenhire suddenly retiring due to health concerns were two of the topics we covered on WISE Sports Radio‘s baseball segment.

We also discussed the San Diego Padres, whom I think I’ve written more about than any other team this season in my role contributing to SI.com’s Dodgers site.

WISE Sports Radio MLB spot: Sept. 9, 2020

Going into the 2020 baseball season, the New York Yankees looked like the best team in the American League, maybe the best in MLB. But the Yanks are currently third in the AL East with a 21-21 record and barely hold the league’s final playoff spot.

WISE Sports Radio MLB update: Aug. 10, 2020

Baseball talk is back on WISE Sports Radio after Pat Ryan’s much-deserved week off. And MLB had another COVID-19 breakout since last we spoke, this one on the St. Louis Cardinals.

We discuss the possible repercussions of the Cards’ outbreak, along with another brawl involving the Houston Astros, the investigation of Tyler Skaggs’s death, and Cleveland Indians pitcher Zack Plesac breaking the COVID-19 protocols he was touting a month ago.

WISE Sports Radio MLB update: July 27, 2020

Playing a Major League Baseball season amid the COVID-19 pandemic was always going to be risky. Yet it only took four days for the virus to break out among one MLB team, causing the postponement of two games and maybe more to come.

Naturally, the COVID-19 outbreak among the Miami Marlins was the main topic on WISE Sports Radio‘s baseball segment. Eleven players and two coaches tested positive for the virus a day after the Marlins played the Philadelphia Phillies. Should that game have been played on Sunday? Can MLB really expect to play a season?
