WISE Sports Radio talk: Baseball Hall of Fame vote, Sean Payton’s next, Ben Roethlisberger retires

We talk NFL Thursdays on WISE Sports Radio, but begin by catching up on the Baseball Hall of Fame vote, which was announced after our Monday MLB spot. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens not getting elected caused a lot of outrage, but it can’t have been a surprise to anyone with the PED controversy surrounding their careers.

On to football, we discuss two retirements. Well, in Sean Payton’s case, it might be a sabbatical. He’ll probably take a year off from coaching and is expected to give broadcasting a try. Ben Roethlisberger, however, is definitely calling it a career after 18 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

WISE Sports Radio talk: MLB lockout update, robot umpires, Matthew Stafford breakout

After a one-week break to focus on my new job, I’m back on WISE Sports Radio for some baseball talk (with a little bit of football mixed in).

Baseball team owners and players are back at the negotiating table. Will this end Major League Baseball’s lockout in time for Spring Training? Robot umpires — or an automated strike zone — will be used this coming season in Triple-A. Will we see this in MLB? And as a Detroit Lions fan, is it bittersweet to see Matthew Stafford one game away from the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams?

WISE Sports Radio football talk: 2022 NFL coaching carousel, Wild Card playoffs begin

Successful recording! After a couple of strikeouts, my recording app, computer, and timing all worked out for what should be entirely routine by now. Pardon the baseball analogy introducing football content.

For WISE Sports Radio‘s NFL segment, we discuss Brian Flores’ surprising firing by the Miami Dolphins and the coaching vacancies for the Chicago Bears, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, and Minnesota Vikings. Three of those teams are also looking for a general manager. And we take a look at the Wild Card playoff weekend.

WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: Kyle Seager retires, Cody Bellinger re-signs, MLB payrolls dip

Happy New Year! After a holiday break, we’re back on WISE Sports Radio. And despite Major League Baseball currently being in a lockout, there’s some news worth talking about.

Kyle Seager, one of baseball’s best sluggers that some fans may not know of, announced his retirement after an 11-year career with the Seattle Mariners. Cody Bellinger agreed to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the worst season of his career. And MLB team payrolls were down by four percent in 2021, which is a big reason why players and owners are in a labor dispute.

WISE Sports Radio talk: MLB lockout, Buck Showalter to Mets, Lions win, Spider-Man boom

Despite Major League Baseball being in a lockout, there’s just enough news for our regular WISE Sports Radio segment. That includes an update on the lockout itself, along with Buck Showalter returning to New York to manage the Mets and longtime executive Roland Hemond passing away.

Well, maybe there’s not enough baseball news for a full segment since we also talk about the Detroit Lions winning their second game of the season and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will probably dominate the box office for weeks to come.

You can stream The WISE Guys from 3 to 6 p.m. ET at wisesportsradio.com (courtesy of Mars Hill University) or the TuneIn app. Locally in the Asheville area, dial up 1310 or 970 AM and 102.9 FM. And thanks to Happy Hill Restaurant — an Asheville institution which is closing after 38 years of business — for sponsoring the MLB segment.
