Curses! No radio clips due to technical difficulties, operator error

Not off to a great start in posting radio clips in 2022. I didn’t get Monday’s WISE Sports Radio baseball segment recorded because my computer wouldn’t recognize my microphone as a speaker and playback device. But had I checked earlier than five minutes before the call, I probably would’ve had that fixed.

Major League Baseball is still in a lockout with no negotiation talks scheduled, but we did have some topics to chat up, mostly in sports media. (And we hardly ever talk sports media on WISE, despite that being my “day job.”)

MLB Network dismissed reporter Ken Rosenthal for criticizing MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. At ESPN, former Yankees and Mets pitcher David Cone joins Sunday Night Baseball as an analyst, while an alternate SNB telecast will feature Alex Rodriguez and Michael Kay. And outside of media, the Yankees hired Rachel Balkovec to manage their Single-A Tampa minor-league team, making her the first-ever female skipper in the minors.

WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: Kyle Seager retires, Cody Bellinger re-signs, MLB payrolls dip

Happy New Year! After a holiday break, we’re back on WISE Sports Radio. And despite Major League Baseball currently being in a lockout, there’s some news worth talking about.

Kyle Seager, one of baseball’s best sluggers that some fans may not know of, announced his retirement after an 11-year career with the Seattle Mariners. Cody Bellinger agreed to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the worst season of his career. And MLB team payrolls were down by four percent in 2021, which is a big reason why players and owners are in a labor dispute.

WISE Sports Radio talk: MLB lockout, Buck Showalter to Mets, Lions win, Spider-Man boom

Despite Major League Baseball being in a lockout, there’s just enough news for our regular WISE Sports Radio segment. That includes an update on the lockout itself, along with Buck Showalter returning to New York to manage the Mets and longtime executive Roland Hemond passing away.

Well, maybe there’s not enough baseball news for a full segment since we also talk about the Detroit Lions winning their second game of the season and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will probably dominate the box office for weeks to come.

WISE Sports Radio football talk: Urban Meyer done, Daniel Snyder allegations, COVID outbreaks throughout league

The Urban Meyer era is over in Jacksonville, and before the embattled coach could even finish a full NFL season. What was the final straw with Jags team owner Shad Khan and where does Meyer go from here?

On our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, we also discuss Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder reportedly interfering with the league’s investigation into sexual misconduct allegations, COVID-19 hitting several teams hard, and Germany courting the NFL.

Sports media talk on the radio with Jim Irizarry

It’s the holiday season, which means some regular sports talk radio host are taking vacations. That works out well for our man Jim Irizarry, who’s filling in on 960 AM WSBT Sports Radio‘s “Weekday Sportsbeat” in South Bend.

Despite my gig at Awful Announcing, I don’t get to talk about sports media on the radio that much. (I know it’s kind of a niche topic unless there’s a big story like ESPN’s Maria Taylor-Rachel Nichols uproar earlier this year.) So it was fun to talk about some of the current rumors about who Amazon will hire for Thursday Night Football and respond to both Cris Collinsworth and Desmond Howard causing a stir with what they recently said on TV.
