WISE Sports Radio NFL: Tom Brady’s future payday, Christmas football, notable free agents still available

Tom Brady has shown quite a talent for upstaging other news with announcements of his own during the past few months, mostly regarding his possible retirement and what he’ll do after he stops playing football. This week, he hijacked the NFL news cycle with Fox Sports announcing that the seven-time Super Bowl winner will be their lead TV analyst (and “brand ambassador”) when he finally retires.

On WISE Sports Radio, we discuss Brady’s huge broadcasting payday, the NFL announcing its 2022 schedule (which includes three games on Christmas Day), Josh Lambo suing the Jacksonville Jaguars for how he was treated under Urban Meyer, and notable free agents still available including receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, and cornerback James Bradberry.

WISE Sports Radio NFL talk: Jadeveon Clowney joins Browns, teams eyeing Justin Fields, COVID-19 concerns

The Cleveland Browns suddenly have a formidable defensive line, adding Jadeveon Clowney to a corps that already included Myles Garrett and Sheldon Richardson. Add Takk McKinley and the Browns could put opposing quarterbacks on notice. That led off our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment for the week.

Pat Ryan, Mike Gore, and I also discussed quarterback Justin Fields and which teams might be interested in drafting the Ohio State star. Would the Carolina Panthers take him after making a deal for Sam Darnold last week? And how many players will skip offseason workouts because of the NFL’s current apathy toward COVID protocols?

Also, will the Carolina Panthers keep quarterback Teddy Bridgewater after trying to trade him and upgrade at the position? What are the remaining options? And is Drew Brees going to retire and jump into broadcasting, or is he preparing to play one more season?

WISE Sports Radio NFL hit: April 2, 2020

For those of us in sports media, the NFL is thankfully still making some news that isn’t someone contracting COVID-19 or wondering when a postponed season will resume. (Although football is facing those questions now…)

On Thursday’s WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, Pat Ryan, Mike Gore, and I wonder if Antonio Brown is angling for a gig with the Baltimore Ravens, why no team has signed defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, and whether or not Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and his recovering hip will be the second quarterback selected in the NFL Draft.

WISE Sports Radio NFL segment: March 26, 2020

UNC Asheville coach Mike Morrell guest-hosted with Pat Ryan for Thursday’s WISE Guys show on WISE Sports Radio. So we got some coaching and roster-building insight for our NFL segment. (UNCA is really lucky to have Coach Morrell and women’s coach Brenda Kirkpatrick Brown on campus and in town. Both great coaches and great people.)

We discussed Cam Newton’s chances of catching on with another NFL team after the Carolina Panthers released him this week, the approach new coach Matt Rhule is taking with the roster, and how much the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might improve with Tom Brady.
