WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: New rules! Well, maybe. And other news

Broadcasting from Asheville, North Carolina, Major League Baseball’s initiative to shrink the minor leagues cut close to home with the Asheville Tourists in town. The Tourists were apparently never in danger of losing MLB affiliation, but did switch parent clubs from the Colorado Rockies to the Houston Astros. And they moved up a level from low-Single A to high-A.

Another factor in MLB wanting more control was the ability to use the minor leagues as a testing lab for the many rules changes the sport is considering. On WISE Sports Radio‘s weekly baseball segment, Pat Ryan and I discussed several of the new rules we’ll see in the minors this year, some of which will surely be seen in the majors soon.

WISE Sports Radio NFL spot: Franchise tag surprises, Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Brees

A big part of the NFL offseason began on Tuesday with teams deciding whether or not to put “franchise tags” on free agent players to keep them (and the big salaries that come with that) or let them go to sign elsewhere. On WISE Sports Radio, we highlighted the biggest names tagged and which ones will be in demand on the open market.

Also, will the Carolina Panthers keep quarterback Teddy Bridgewater after trying to trade him and upgrade at the position? What are the remaining options? And is Drew Brees going to retire and jump into broadcasting, or is he preparing to play one more season?

WISE Sports Radio MLB talk: Mariners exec steps in it, baseball’s next big contract, AL East picks

Talking baseball on WISE Sports Radio, we discuss now-former Seattle Mariners president Kevin Mather forcing himself to resign with dumb comments about international players, keeping top prospects in the minor leagues, and the neighborhood surrounding T-Mobile Park.

WISE Sports Radio Fernando Tatis Jr. clip: Feb. 18, 2021

Thursdays on WISE Sports Radio, I usually talk football with Pat Ryan and Mike Gore. But with Fernando Tatis Jr. signing a 14-year, $340 million mega-deal with the San Diego Padres and Tim Tebow announcing his retirement from minor league baseball, we mixed in some MLB news with our NFL talk.

Unfortunately, I screwed up with the recording of the segment. Actually, I recorded everything just fine and was in the process of editing it to post here. But my computer was also waiting for me to restart for an update and I must have hit a button that gave it the go-ahead. And I hadn’t saved the audio file for Thursday’s radio segment. All flushed away.

But before that, I did save a clip of us talking about Tatis’s contract to post on social media. So that’s what will go here today.

WISE Sports Radio MLB update: Feb. 15, 2021

We’re getting closer to spring training and the start of the 2021 Major League Baseball season. And the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers just brought back a key piece for their roster.

On Monday’s WISE Sports Radio baseball segment, we discuss the Dodgers re-signing Justin Turner and inking Trevor Bauer to shorter-term contracts is a trend that other MLB teams might follow, considering their recent success. Also, why did the New York Mets invite Tim Tebow to spring training? Does he really have a shot at a major league career?
