Raising a glass to Ned Beatty, so good in so many movies

I’m just guessing that Ned Beatty wouldn’t want his role as Otis, Lex Luthor’s bumbling sidekick, in Superman: The Movie to be the first thing mentioned when looking back at his career. (I’m imagining Alec Guinness rolling his eyes when he was immediately attached to Obi-Wan Kenobi by so many when he passed away.)

But maybe Beatty wouldn’t have minded either. Generations of fans remember him fondly in that film and it provided much needed comic relief among Christopher Reeve’s big blue boy scout and Gene Hackman’s megalomanical villain (who bullied poor Otis a bit too much). There are worse legacies for an actor to leave behind.

WISE Sports Radio talk: Gerrit Cole’s filibuster, Deshaun Watson wants Denver Broncos, Jared Goff empowerment

Thursdays on WISE Sports Radio, we usually talk football. But we began this segment responding to Gerrit Cole’s long, bizarre answer to being asked if he uses Spider Tack to get a better grip on a baseball. The longer he talked, the guiltier he looked.

When we got to football, we discussed former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel passing away this week, Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers teammates supporting him, Deshaun Watson saying he wants to be traded to the Denver Broncos, and Jared Goff liking his new coaches with the Detroit Lions.

Major League Baseball umpires will begin checking pitchers more closely for using foreign substances like pine tar, Spider Tack, and Pelican Glue. For our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment, we discuss why MLB is suddenly cracking down on pitchers getting more grip.

Also, Arizona Diamondbacks TV analyst Bob Brenly has a reputation for criticizing players of color. The D-Backs have the worst record in MLB, which will probably result in players being traded. And Tony La Russa has the second-most all-time wins among baseball managers. Is he truly among the sport’s best?

WISE Sports Radio football talk: Seahawks eyeing Julio Jones, Mac Jones impressing Patriots, USFL returns

NFL teams are going through their respective mini-camps (or “Organized Team Activities”) now, which provides a few storylines to cover for our WISE Sports Radio football segment.

The Julio Jones trade drama may be nearing a resolution, while the Green Bay Packers may be preparing for life without Aaron Rodgers. Mac Jones might be further along than the New England Patriots expected, the Carolina Panthers moving a playmaker, and the disturbing practice of race-norming.
