Thursdays on WISE Sports Radio, we usually talk football. But we began this segment responding to Gerrit Cole’s long, bizarre answer to being asked if he uses Spider Tack to get a better grip on a baseball. The longer he talked, the guiltier he looked.
When we got to football, we discussed former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel passing away this week, Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers teammates supporting him, Deshaun Watson saying he wants to be traded to the Denver Broncos, and Jared Goff liking his new coaches with the Detroit Lions.
If you listened to the segment, there was one point where I mentioned Fassel’s reputation as a nice guy and then struggled to articulate that football coaches have to be tough. Part of the reason I hesitated was because I should’ve just asked Charlie Metcalf whether that was true.
For those who don’t know, Charlie was a longtime assistant coach at Asheville High and surely had insight on the matter. I should’ve just shut up and let him explain. I don’t know if this is an issue for anyone else who appears on the radio for guest analysis, but you can fall into the tendency to just keep on talking because, hey, they invited you to talk, right? But when others have a better view, it’s better to step back. So I should apologize to Charlie and WISE Sports Radio listeners.
One more thing: If you don’t know what Spider Tack is, it’s very popular among competitive strongmen who lift smooth, round Atlas Stones and don’t want their hands slipping.
You can listen to The WISE Guys from 3 to 6 p.m. ET streaming on wisesportsradio.com or the TuneIn app. Locally in the Asheville area, dial up 1310 or 970 AM and 102.9 FM.
