The 2022 Major League Baseball season once looked like it may never happen. But Opening Day is Thursday, which makes Monday’s WISE Sports Radio baseball segment the last one before games begin to count.

The rush to prepare for the season after the owners’ lockout will probably result in some injuries. The New York Mets might be the highest-profile example of that with injuries to ace pitchers Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. Also, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox make the sort of one-for-one trade not often seen anymore. And the Los Angeles Angels cut Justin Upton loose despite owing him $28 million this season.

WISE Sports Radio talk: MLB lockout, Buck Showalter to Mets, Lions win, Spider-Man boom

Despite Major League Baseball being in a lockout, there’s just enough news for our regular WISE Sports Radio segment. That includes an update on the lockout itself, along with Buck Showalter returning to New York to manage the Mets and longtime executive Roland Hemond passing away.

Well, maybe there’s not enough baseball news for a full segment since we also talk about the Detroit Lions winning their second game of the season and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will probably dominate the box office for weeks to come.

WISE Sports Radio talk: Michigan beats Ohio State, Max Scherzer gets Mets money, baseball spending spree

Mondays typically mean baseball talk for me on WISE Sports Radio. But with Michigan’s huge win over Ohio State on Saturday, Pat Ryan wanted to get my Wolverines fan feelings on Jim Harbaugh finally beating the Buckeyes on his sixth try, 42-27.

But baseball teams are throwing some big money at free agent talent, looking to beat the Dec. 2 deadline when team owners will lock out the players and bring the offseason to a freeze. Max Scherzer drew the top headlines by signing with the New York Mets. But plenty of other free agents, including infielder Marcus Semien, pitchers Robbie Ray and Kevin Gausman, signed multi-million contracts shortly before we went on the air.

WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: Mets’ thumbs-down, Trevor Bauer’s status, and Giants’ chances

Buying a ticket to a baseball game gives you the right to express displeasure with the home team if you feel they’re not giving a suitable effort or playing badly. Maybe that reaction isn’t always fair, but it’s part of being a fan. And it’s also part of being a professional athlete.

For our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment, we discussed Javier Baez and other New York Mets players giving a thumbs-down to fans for how they’ve reacted to the team’s poor performance recently. It’s a gesture that team management definitely didn’t support.
