Talking baseball and sports media with ol’ pal Jim Irizarry – on the radio!

Our old friend Jim Irizarry now has a full-time gig at 960 AM WSBT Sports Radio in South Bend and this week, he filled in on the Sportsbeat AM morning show. Happy for Jim to be back on the radio and happy to chat with him!

Since Jim and I often talked baseball on his streaming radio show and podcast, I assumed that’s what we’d discuss. And we did, with the decisive Game 5 of the Dodgers-Giants National League Division Series. But Jim really wanted to gab on some sports media stories — which is great because that’s what I cover for a living! I just don’t get to talk about it much on the radio.

Baseball is never more exciting than during the postseason and the divisional playoffs haven’t disappointed thus far. On our WISE Sports Radio segment, we discuss an unusual play in Game 3 of the Rays-Red Sox series, the Braves taking control over the Brewers, and the Dodgers in a good position to defeat the Giants.

And with the Detroit Lions suffering another heartbreaking last-second loss, we talk about coach Dan Campbell’s emotional post-game press conference. Earlier, I wrote a column at The Comeback about how important that was for the Lions and their fans.

His latest idea to make the game more interesting is a radical change to the postseason format seemingly intended to make the playoffs more TV-friendly and reality TV-like.
