WISE Sports Radio talk: Baseball Hall of Fame vote, Sean Payton’s next, Ben Roethlisberger retires

We talk NFL Thursdays on WISE Sports Radio, but begin by catching up on the Baseball Hall of Fame vote, which was announced after our Monday MLB spot. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens not getting elected caused a lot of outrage, but it can’t have been a surprise to anyone with the PED controversy surrounding their careers.

On to football, we discuss two retirements. Well, in Sean Payton’s case, it might be a sabbatical. He’ll probably take a year off from coaching and is expected to give broadcasting a try. Ben Roethlisberger, however, is definitely calling it a career after 18 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

WISE Sports Radio football talk: Urban Meyer done, Daniel Snyder allegations, COVID outbreaks throughout league

The Urban Meyer era is over in Jacksonville, and before the embattled coach could even finish a full NFL season. What was the final straw with Jags team owner Shad Khan and where does Meyer go from here?

On our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, we also discuss Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder reportedly interfering with the league’s investigation into sexual misconduct allegations, COVID-19 hitting several teams hard, and Germany courting the NFL.

You can stream The WISE Guys from 3 to 6 p.m. ET on wisesportsradio.com or the TuneIn app. Locally in the Asheville area, you can listen on 1310 or 970 AM and 102.9 FM.

WISE Sports Radio host Pat Ryan and his guest co-host Mike Gore knew Keith well and devoted Thursday’s show to their friend. Asheville Citizen-Times columnist John Boyle wrote a wonderful tribute to his colleague. If you want to know what Keith meant to Asheville, John says it all.

Since we usually talk about the NFL on Thursdays, we still discussed some topics like Urban Meyer’s continued mishandling of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills’ struggles, and Bill Belichick returning the New England Patriots to prominence. But really, the show was about Keith.

WISE Sports Radio NFL talk: Urban denies USC, Eagles soar, Bills flop hard

Urban Meyer taking the Jacksonville Jaguars job was always a head-scratcher when major programs like Texas and USC figured to have openings. So when USC fired coach Clay Helton this week, it was natural to speculate that Meyer — who’s been enormously successful at Utah, Florida, and Ohio State — would be a good fit in Los Angeles. But he just took the Jaguars job!

On our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, Pat Ryan, Mike Gore, and I discuss whether Meyer really could bolt for the Trojans. Other topics include the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line issues, the Buffalo Bills’ disappointing Week 1 loss to the Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles’ surprising win, and Taylor Heinicke’s debut as quarterback for the Washington Football Team.
