WISE Sports Radio talk: Red-hot Cardinals, Yankees-Red Sox, Trout shuts down, Lions fan pain

Only one week remains in the 2021 Major League Baseball regular season and teams are still fighting for postseason position with six or seven games remaining.

On WISE Sports Radio, we talked about the St. Louis Cardinals’ 16-game winning streak and the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox battling to host the one-game AL Wild Card playoff game. Superstar Mike Trout calls it a season after playing only 36 games this year. And we take a brief turn to the NFL so Pat Ryan can make fun of me for being a Detroit Lions fan.

WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: Overlooked Brewers, Ryan Braun retires, Padres’ implosion, Ohtani vs. Vlad Jr.

Only a couple weeks remain in the 2021 Major League Baseball season and there are some close playoff races to follow. But one team that’s been very good hasn’t gotten much attention outside of diehard baseball followers: The Milwaukee Brewers, with a 91-58 record and 11.5-game lead in the NL Central.

We finally give the Brewers their due on our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment. Interesting that Milwaukee’s been successful without a guy who was their best player for years, Ryan Braun. We also talk about the once-promising, now-imploding San Diego Padres and whether Shohei Ohtani or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. should win the American League Most Valuable Player award.

WISE Sports Radio NFL talk: Urban denies USC, Eagles soar, Bills flop hard

Urban Meyer taking the Jacksonville Jaguars job was always a head-scratcher when major programs like Texas and USC figured to have openings. So when USC fired coach Clay Helton this week, it was natural to speculate that Meyer — who’s been enormously successful at Utah, Florida, and Ohio State — would be a good fit in Los Angeles. But he just took the Jaguars job!

On our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, Pat Ryan, Mike Gore, and I discuss whether Meyer really could bolt for the Trojans. Other topics include the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line issues, the Buffalo Bills’ disappointing Week 1 loss to the Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles’ surprising win, and Taylor Heinicke’s debut as quarterback for the Washington Football Team.

WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: Lindor explodes, Bauer done for 2021, Padres slide, Scherzer gets 3,000

As typically happens in early September, the NFL and college football attracted most of the headlines (and viewing audiences, I presume). But plenty was happening in Major League Baseball too.

For our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment, Pat Ryan and I chatted about the Yankees-Mets Subway Series rivalry escalating, Trevor Bauer’s 2021 season ending, the Padres’ postseason chances fading, and Max Scherzer’s greatness ascending.

WISE Sports Radio NFL talk: Texans starting Tyrod, Bradley Chubb’s driving, 49ers’ QB, MVP predictions

Many NFL teams will go into the 2021 season with new quarterbacks under center. It’s probably not a surprise that one of them is the Houston Texans, who are starting Tyrod Taylor because of the nearly two dozen lawsuits Deshaun Watson faces alleging sexual assault and misconduct.

For our WISE Sports Radio NFL segment, we also discuss the San Francisco 49ers not announcing their starter, though Jimmy Garoppolo seems pretty happy with the decision. Why was Denver Broncos linebacker Bradley Chubb arrested? And is Patrick Mahomes the easy choice for NFL Most Valuable Player or are there any other viable candidates?
