WISE Sports Radio chatter: Michigan, Lions win! MLB lockout, Buck O’Neil gets to the Hall of Fame

Yep, it was a good football weekend here at Casselbloggy HQ. Michigan won the Big Ten championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff, matched up against Georgia. And the Detroit Lions won their first game of the 2021 season. So that led off our WISE Sports Radio segment.

That’s probably fortunate because there’s not much baseball news to discuss with team owners locking out the players after Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement expired, other than some good news from the Baseball Hall of Fame. (Pardon the audio briefly dropping out at the 6:45 mark.)

WISE Sports Radio football talk: Adrian Peterson returns, Christian McCaffrey done, Michigan in Big Ten title game

Between schedule shuffles on WISE Sports Radio with the high school football season and Thanksgiving, it’s been a while since I’ve been on to talk football. I almost didn’t make this week’s segment as an emergency came up right before I was to go on the air. But everything calmed down and was OK in a couple hours, so I was able to call in for the final segment.

Adrian Peterson extending his long NFL career with another team, Christian McCaffrey going down for the season, the risk of committing long-term to running backs, Sean Payton’s love for Taysom Hill, and Michigan’s chances in the Big Ten championship game were among the topics I chatted about with Pat Ryan and Mike Gore.

Talking baseball and sports media with ol’ pal Jim Irizarry – on the radio!

Our old friend Jim Irizarry now has a full-time gig at 960 AM WSBT Sports Radio in South Bend and this week, he filled in on the Sportsbeat AM morning show. Happy for Jim to be back on the radio and happy to chat with him!

Since Jim and I often talked baseball on his streaming radio show and podcast, I assumed that’s what we’d discuss. And we did, with the decisive Game 5 of the Dodgers-Giants National League Division Series. But Jim really wanted to gab on some sports media stories — which is great because that’s what I cover for a living! I just don’t get to talk about it much on the radio.

WISE Sports Radio talk: Rule hurts Rays, White Sox accuse Astros, Dan Campbell’s tears

Baseball is never more exciting than during the postseason and the divisional playoffs haven’t disappointed thus far. On our WISE Sports Radio segment, we discuss an unusual play in Game 3 of the Rays-Red Sox series, the Braves taking control over the Brewers, and the Dodgers in a good position to defeat the Giants.

And with the Detroit Lions suffering another heartbreaking last-second loss, we talk about coach Dan Campbell’s emotional post-game press conference. Earlier, I wrote a column at The Comeback about how important that was for the Lions and their fans.

WISE Sports Radio talk: Red-hot Cardinals, Yankees-Red Sox, Trout shuts down, Lions fan pain

Only one week remains in the 2021 Major League Baseball regular season and teams are still fighting for postseason position with six or seven games remaining.

On WISE Sports Radio, we talked about the St. Louis Cardinals’ 16-game winning streak and the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox battling to host the one-game AL Wild Card playoff game. Superstar Mike Trout calls it a season after playing only 36 games this year. And we take a brief turn to the NFL so Pat Ryan can make fun of me for being a Detroit Lions fan.
