WISE Sports Radio baseball: Fernando Tatis Jr. suspension, Tigers fire Al Avila, Jacob deGrom returns

We’re back on WISE Sports Radio after a break that went longer than planned, due to a vacation that was unfortunately eventful for host Pat Ryan. From a Casselbloggy standpoint, we’ll still be doing Major League Baseball segments on Mondays. But NFL spots will be every other Thursday while Pat saves his energy to focus on the local high school football season.

This week, we chat about Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 80-game suspension for PED use, the Detroit Tigers firing general manager Al Avila, and star pitcher Jacob deGrom rejoining a New York Mets team that’s already playing excellent baseball.

WISE Sports Radio Baseball: Trevor Bauer suspension, Clayton Kershaw’s record, New York Mets’ success

Major League Baseball made a statement by suspending Trevor Bauer for two seasons (324 games) under its domestic violence and sexual misconduct policy. Our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment begins with discussing the punishment and whether Bauer has any chance at returning to MLB.

On the field — with more pleasant topics — we also cover Clayton Kershaw setting the Los Angeles Dodgers career strikeout mark and whether or not he’s the franchise’s greatest pitcher, five New York Mets combining for a no-hitter (in addition to the team having the best record in the National League), and the abysmal Cincinnati Reds.

WISE Sports Radio MLB spot: Jan. 13, 2020

Sometimes, breaking news makes you toss previous plans in the trash. That happened for Monday’s WISE Sports Radio baseball segment when Major League Baseball announced that Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch were being suspended for one year due to their complicity in the team’s sign-stealing scheme during the 2017 season.

Anything else Pat Ryan and I planned to discuss was nixed, maybe shelved for Wednesday’s spot. I had some trouble recording for the first couple of minutes, so this clip picks up after Pat has already introduced the story. But we dive in from there.
