Baseball on Apple TV+ and Peacock: New audience or cash-grab?

It’s always fun when Jim Irizarry fills in on 960 AM WSBT Sports Radio‘s “Weekday Sportsbeat” in South Bend because that means I might get to do some radio with him. (An early-morning wake-up might not be so fun for Jim…)

That was the case on Thursday morning with the 2022 Major League Baseball season set to begin a few hours later. But rather than talk about the season at hand (Go Tigers! Go Mets!), Jim combined peanut butter with chocolate to discuss MLB’s new streaming TV deals with Apple TV+ and Peacock. Is this baseball embracing the future or making it more difficult for fans to find the product?

WISE Sports Radio Baseball: Mets’ arm issues, Kimbrel-Pollock trade, Justin Upton

The 2022 Major League Baseball season once looked like it may never happen. But Opening Day is Thursday, which makes Monday’s WISE Sports Radio baseball segment the last one before games begin to count.

The rush to prepare for the season after the owners’ lockout will probably result in some injuries. The New York Mets might be the highest-profile example of that with injuries to ace pitchers Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. Also, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox make the sort of one-for-one trade not often seen anymore. And the Los Angeles Angels cut Justin Upton loose despite owing him $28 million this season.

WISE Sports Radio NFL Talk: Vikings and Dolphins get new coaches, McVay and Donald staying?

The Los Angeles Rams have won the Super Bowl and the 2021-22 NFL season is finally over. But there is still plenty of offseason news to cover, which we got to on our WISE Sports Radio football spot.

Kevin O’Connell (not Jim Harbaugh – whew!) is the Minnesota Vikings’ new coach. Mike McDaniel is the captain now for the Miami Dolphins. And Sean McVay and Aaron Donald apparently put rumors of their retirement down while celebrating the Rams’ championship.

WISE Sports Radio talk: Baseball still locked out, no Joe West fans, Matthew Stafford wins Super Bowl

Major League Baseball team owners and players still seem to have no urgency toward reaching a new collective bargaining agreement in time for the 2022 season to start. That leads our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment. Does anyone think MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is doing a good job here?

Also, Andre Dawson and Ferguson Jenkins were among the players who did not like retiring umpire Joe West. Tragic news for former major-leaguer Jeremy Giambi. And how does a Detroit Lions fan feel about Matthew Stafford winning the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams?

WISE Sports Radio talk: Baseball Hall of Fame vote, Sean Payton’s next, Ben Roethlisberger retires

We talk NFL Thursdays on WISE Sports Radio, but begin by catching up on the Baseball Hall of Fame vote, which was announced after our Monday MLB spot. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens not getting elected caused a lot of outrage, but it can’t have been a surprise to anyone with the PED controversy surrounding their careers.

On to football, we discuss two retirements. Well, in Sean Payton’s case, it might be a sabbatical. He’ll probably take a year off from coaching and is expected to give broadcasting a try. Ben Roethlisberger, however, is definitely calling it a career after 18 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
