WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: Mets-Phillies rivalry, Bryce Harper’s face, and Jesus Luzardo’s pinky finger

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies could be giving us another good baseball rivalry. On WISE Sports Radio, we discuss this past weekend’s series where tensions heated up between the two clubs.

Also, how is Phillies slugger Bryce Harper after taking a pitch to the face? How absurd is MLB’s three-batter rule for relief pitchers? And baseball’s amusing history of strange injuries has a new entry, thanks to Oakland A’s pitcher Jesus Luzardo.

Mourning the loss of comic book artist John Paul Leon

Sad news in the comic book world Sunday night as news of artist John Paul Leon’s death circulated on social media.

The veteran illustrator was 49 years old and had struggled with cancer for several years, which delayed the full publication of his most recent project, the Batman: Creature of the Night mini-series. (The complete series was released in a collection last year and is now available in paperback.)

Leon’s editor on Creature of the Night, Chris Conroy, announced the passing on Twitter.

If asked to name my favorite comic book artists, I doubt Leon would be among the first to come to mind. I grew up loving George Perez, John Byrne, Frank Miller, John Romita Jr. Walt Simonson, and Alan Davis. (There are so many more.)

Yet I greatly admired Leon’s work as I renewed interest in comics in the late 1990s. Eventually, if I found out he was drawing something, I tried to check it out. His artwork always grabbed me from the comic shop rack. And if I saw a cover of his, I hoped he did the interior artwork as well.

WISE Sports Radio baseball talk: deGrom dominance, Tatis vs. Bauer, no no-hitter for Bumgarner

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom appears to be on his way to a third National League Cy Young Award, compiling an 0.31 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 29 innings in his first four starts of the 2021 season. He’s also helping himself at the plate, batting .545 with two RBI. As it turns out, some pitchers can hit.

On our WISE Sports Radio baseball segment, we discuss deGrom’s dominance, the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers continuing to give us MLB’s best rivalry, and Madison Bumgarner not being credited with a no-hitter despite allowing no hits in a seven-inning (shortened for a doubleheader) ballgame.

WISE Sports Radio NFL talk: 49ers’draft rumors, Panthers trade buzz, Tim Tebow-Urban Meyer reunion (maybe)

The NFL Draft is finally here! In the hours leading up to pro football’s annual player selection meeting, there are still plenty of trade rumors. Anybody moving up? Who’s moving down? And everyone wants to know what the San Francisco 49ers will do with the No. 3 overall selection.

We also love talking about Tim Tebow on WISE Sports Radio, so news that he worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars and his former college coach Urban Meyer to perhaps catch on as a tight end is news that definitely intrigued us. Probably better for him to get back to football than trying baseball.
